Alex Fridlyand

Dr. Fridlyand studied mathematics and graduated summa cum laude from Moscow Forest Technical Institute. In 1991, he moved to the United States to study turbulence and chaos theory at the Georgia Institute of Technology, Daniel Guggenheim School of Aerospace Engineering and received his Ph.D. there in 1995. That same year Dr. Fridlyand founded an Internet infrastructure company that quickly merged with recently founded SoftAware Networks Inc. In 2000, SoftAware Networks Inc. was sold to Digital Island Inc., a publicly traded internet infrastructure company, which a year later was acquired by Cable and Wireless plc, a 150 year old publicly traded UK company. Dr. Fridlyand stayed on until late 2003 through acquisitions to lead M&A in the areas of Networking, Storage, Security, Computing, and Professional Services.


Dr. Fridlyand joined Soros Strategic Partners in May of 2005. He currently represents Soros on the Board of Directors of – oil and gas exploration company Stonegate Production, Canadian based life reinsurer Aurigen Re and the aggregator of insurance companies in run off Syndicate Re, a parent company to Lloyd's Vibe Syndicate Management Company. Dr. Fridlyand is also a Director of Narragansett Bay Insurance Company, a homeowner insurer in the Northeastern USA, and Q Re Holdings, a catastrophe reinsurer domiciled in Bermuda.


Dr. Fridlyand is also an observer on various Boards, such as of Glacier Re, a Switzerland based specialty and catastrophe reinsurer, and oil and gas exploration company Phoenix Explorations. He is also a member of Advisory Committee for Houston based Energy Special Situation Fund.
